Annwn The Underworld in Welsh mythology, or "land of departed souls". Also called Annwfn. Annwn is ruled by Arawn, Lord of the Underworld.
Blood-Bond The vampiristic (and very sexual) bond between two people where one has to drink from the other in order to survive. There is a blood-bond between Acheron and Artemis, as well as between Sin and Katra Agrotera.
Cassiopeia Constellation; queen of Ethiopia and mother of Andromeda. In her vanity and pride, she boasted that she and her daughter were more beautiful than the sea nymphs, thus incurring the wrath of Poseidon. To thwart his curse, Cassiopeia chained Andromeda to a rock as a sacrifice, but she was saved by the hero Perseus. Poseidon's punishment for Cassiopeia was to place her in the heavens, upside down on her throne in disgrace for all to see forevermore.
Cerberus Three-headed snake-tailed dog who guards the gates of the Underworld. He keeps the living from entering, and the dead from leaving. And he does a good job... when he's not drugged or magicked by someone who's cleverer than his master
Ceredons Creatures with the head of a dog, the body of a dragon, and the tail of a scorpion. Protectors of Apollymi. They are forbidden to leave her realm (at least, they're supposed to be).
Charonte Demon Ancient demon race the Olympian gods feared, but the Atlantean gods managed to tame. They can bond to gods, Hunters, and humans as companions. Once bonded, they can rest in the form of a tattoo on their bonded's body. Charontes are the über-id, they love to shop, kill, and eat everything. Easy to annoy, dangerous when angry, and big-time fun to party with.
You do not, however, want to be killed by a Charonte. Charontes do not just destroy the body of their victim. They also destroy the ousia—the life force that exists beyond the body or soul. A Charonte can be killed by an Atlantean dagger.
Charontes normally sleep with their feet in the air (usually propped up against a wall), and they snore very loudly.
Chloe Female statue that guards the temple of Demeter on Olympus.
Chthonians The god-killers. A long-ago race of men and women who banded together as policemen for the gods. They were the check-and-balance system for the universe... until they turned on one another for reasons known only to themselves. Now the handful who have survived watch over mankind with a bitter eye and with no real leader. Because of their hostility toward one another, the earth has been divided among them for safekeeping. They are highly territorial.
Chthonic Pertaining to very, very ancient Greek gods of the earth, or spirits of the Underworld. Some chthonic cults practiced ritual sacrifice. Most of the chthonic gods and goddesses were often associated with fertility.
Cuchulainn The Hercules of Irish mythology, it was said that Cuchulainn could never be defeated in battle. He wielded a spear called the Gae Bolga.
Diktyon One of Artemis's hunting nets. A diktyon can capture and hold a Dark-Hunter. It will also negate all powers, even those of a god.
Dimme Anu and Enlil's final revenge. The Dimme are seven female Sumerian demons unlike anything even I can imagine. They are uncontrollable, even for the gods. They were locked away in a cell that, unfortunately, has a time release that weakens every few millennia. If the Sumerian gods are still alive, they reseal the seven demon sisters and life goes on as normal. But should something happen to the pantheon and there be no more Sumerian gods to reseal their tomb, the Dimme are unleashed on the world to destroy it and whatever pantheon is in charge. The Dimme were the Sumerians' last laugh against whoever killed them.
Dolophoni Children of the Furies and assassins of the gods. Both male and female, they were the ones who originally gathered the Oneroi together for Zeus to punish. Their weapons are ¬made by Hephaestus, in order to cause the most harm... and to kill other gods. Once they have been set on a death hunt, the ¬order cannot be recanted. They don't really have a set of rules; you just hope they abide by everyone else's. It can be said, though, that they only kill for a reason justifiable to Themis. If they kill needlessly, they are executed. The Dolophoni can ultimately be controlled by the Furies.
Elysian Fields Also called the Elysian Plains, this was the final resting place of the souls of heroes. It is the only part of Hades's Underworld realm where good souls go to live out their eternity in paradise. They have everything their heart desires, and they can be reincarnated, if they so choose.
Erinyes (Furies) The three goddesses of Vengeance, said to be born from the blood of the ancient god Uranus when he was cas¬trated by his son Cronus. They often appear dressed in black leather with black hair and lipstick. They have fangs, dark eyes, and snakes in their hair. (See Alecto, Megeara, Tisiphone.) They are the older sisters of the Meliae, and they draw from the power of the entire Greek pantheon to kill.
The Furies are also referred to as the Eumenides—meaning "kind ones"—because they are vindictive, but fair.
Four Realms Time, Space, Earth, Dreams. These are what the Pyramid of Protection guard. There is only a small group of individuals who can walk all four.
Gallu Ancient Sumerian demons created to combat the Sumerian pantheon's enemies. (Specifically, they were created to battle against the Charonte demons.) The horrible demon Asag was used as the donator father in their creation.
The gallu can turn humans into one of them with a bite. They have two rows of razor-sharp teeth and unlike Daimons can walk in daylight. If you can catch it early enough, you can cauterize the bite wound and stop the poison from spreading through your body.
The poison in their bite could infect even gods and make them demons as well. Daimons can also become gallu... and faster too, since Daimon metabolism is so high. (A Daimon gallu does not die with a pierced heart or head.) A gallu Daimon is serious shit.
The only way to kill a gallu is to behead the creature (hit it right between the eyes or sever the spine) and burn its body (They explode... and stink when they do.) It is the only way to completely destroy the bite poison and to keep them from regenerating.
Sin, Zakar, and Sin's daughter Ishtar imprisoned the Dimme and the gallu millennia ago. However, after the death of the Sumerian pantheon, the gallu began working their way free of their prison. They became smarter and more organized.
Mirrors show the gallu for what they are. They won't go near them. Nor can gallu infiltrate the dreams of someone they've never met; they must have physical contact first. It should be noted that you cannot kill a gallu in the dream realm. Lucky for us, they can't kill us either.
The gallu are quite prolific. After sex, one female can lay two dozen fertilized eggs. (They were born from eggs, so that they would survive if the mother was killed. The eggs are nearly indestructible.) Their venom is weak when they're young, and their victims will not turn right away.
Godbolt (aka: Astral Blast) A bolt of lightning from out of the hand of a god or demigod. It takes a Dark-Hunter quite a long while to heal after being hit by one of these puppies.
Gorgon Gorgons guard the barrier between the Outerworld and the Underworld. They are women with green, scaly snake's skin, red eyes that glow, fangs, and breath like toxic waste. Only men turn to stone when looking at Gorgons (not gods or Shades).
Ichor A mineral found in the blood of the gods that makes them immortal. (Artemis originally injected Zarek with ichor to give him his Dark-Hunter powers, because she did not want to touch him.)
Isle of Padesios Region in Katoteros where Ash allows the shades a facsimile of paradise.
Kalosis in Atlantean hell where Apollymi is imprisoned, and where once sat the palace of Misos. Kalosis is also home of the Spathi Daimons, and is accessible to Daimons through bolt-holes and laminas. No Dark-Hunters can enter, and few Were-Hunters survive long after visiting this realm of perpetual darkness.
Katoteros Atlantean word for "heaven". Katoteros is a small netherworld between dimensions where the ancient gods once lived, and where Acheron currently makes his home. Apollites and Daimons dream of being able to reclaim their right to rest here.
Kerir Sumerian apocalypse, brought about by the freeing of the seven Dimme.
Kori A handmaiden of Artemis. All the koris live in Artemis' temple in Olympus.
Marking Medallion When a god bestows this medallion upon a human, no one above, on, or below the earth can kill them without making that god very, very angry.
Meliae Sisters to the Erinyes, the Meliae sprang from the same blood spilled when Cronus castrated Uranus. They are nymphs of the ash tree, and a lesser version of the Fates.
Mount Olympus Home of the Greek gods. The twelve most powerful gods are: Zeus; Poseidon; Hera; Demeter; Artemis; Apollo; Athena; Hephaestus; Ares; Aphrodite; Hermes; and Hestia. Dionysus, the youngest of the gods, is sometimes lumped in with these twelve, and sometimes not. The weather on Olympus is always perfect, not too hot or too cold, with a blue sky oversee¬ing lush, green mountains.
Muses The nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne: Calliope; Euterpe; Clio; Erato; Melpomene; Polyhymnia; Terpsichore; Thalia; and Urania. They are all patrons and inspirations of the various arts.
Obulos Greek coins or Persian danace that the dead must pay Charon for passage across to the Underworld.
Oracle Anyone who communes with the gods. Warning: Oracles are a bit like cats. Never go to one if you're looking for a right answer.
Orion "The Hunter". A famous constellation in the night sky. The story goes that Artemis fell in love with Orion so deeply that she forgot to illuminate the night sky and it all went dark. Jeal-ous and hating the fact that his sister was in love with a mere mortal, Apollo dared Artemis to hit a tiny speck on the waves with her bow—which, of course, she did. That speck was Orion. Grief-stricken, Artemis placed the image of her beloved in the night sky forevermore in remembrance.
Another version of the story is that Artemis killed Orion because he raped one of her handmaidens, and then placed his image in the sky as a warning of her wrath.
Ousia The part of a person that exists beyond the body or the soul. The life force.
Pandora The first woman, created by Zeus as a punishment for Prometheus having given fire to the humans. She was given gifts from all the gods: beauty, musical talent, cunning, boldness, charm... and curiosity (thank you, Hera). She was also given a storage jar or box that she was instructed not to open under any circumstance. She did, of course, thus releasing all the misfortunes of mankind into a world that had previously existed in peace.
Pleiades The seven daughters of the Titan Atlas, companions of Artemis, and teachers of Dionysus. They are Maia (mother of Hermes); Electra; Taygete; Alcyone; Celaeno; Sterope; and Merope (wife of Sisyphus). They were hunted by Orion, so Zeus changed them into doves and then into a cluster of stars, which Orion eternally pursues across the night sky.
Priestess Medallion Worn by the Atlantean priestess of Apollymi. Whenever a priestess was in danger, she would put the small, coin-sized medallion in her mouth. Apollymi would then protect the priestess by imbuing the woman with her strength, her power, and sometimes even her overwhelming presence. An ancient priestess medallion is currently worn by Megeara Kafieri.
Pterygsaurus A small, winged dragonlike creature. There are always six pterygsauri in Acheron's throne room. Or were. Xirena has found them to be quite tasty.
Rod of Time The Rod of Time looks like a dagger with a crooked blade. A magical Sumerian implement, the rod is a vital piece of the lock on the imprisoned Dimme. It was Zakar who stashed the rod in Ishtar's tomb for his twin brother Sin to find when the time came. As only a Sumerian was meant to wield the rod, when Acheron touched it (and ultimately bled upon it), it broke the lock on the Dimme's cage. Sin, Zakar, and Katra Agrotera used Kat's sfora to recapture six of the seven Dimme.
Sfora Atlantean scrying globe that people in Katoteros can use to watch events in other realms. Sometimes those who are being viewed can sense that Big Brother is watching. The sfora can see into the past, present, and future.
Sword of Cronus Julian Alexander's sword. Only those with the blood of Cronus may touch the sword without being burned. Julian also has a shield bearing a bronze relief of Athena and her owl and the words "Death before Dishonor".
Tablet of Destiny The Sumerian Tuppi Shimati. Whatever god holds possession of the tablet can render another god powerless. It can also be used to strip a god of his or her powers entirely, thereby allowing the possessor to kill any god. The Tablet of Destiny does not affect the powers of demons.
Tartarus The dark and pain-filled Greek version of hell, where Hades banishes the evil souls he wishes to torture. Only souls completely incapable of love can stay in Tartarus. This dark and woeful place is as far beneath the earth as heaven is above the earth. The entire area is lined with caverns and holding cells where screams of agony echo, begging for mercy. The occupants are seldom in a state to be recognized by even their own mothers, and the caverns are laid out like an intricate labyrinth. Around Tartarus runs a fence of bronze with gates that Poseidon fixed in such a way as to offer no escape. It is here that the Titans, whom Zeus and his siblings defeated, are forever confined.
Telikos Armageddon.
Theocropolis Where Zeus holds court over all the Olympian gods.
Tree of Life Tree that blooms only in the garden of Apollymi. It alone can break the ypnsi.
Valkyries In Norse mythology, the valkyries were the beautiful battle maidens under Odin's command. It was the valkyries who chose which great warriors would die in battle and sit at Odin's table in Valhalla.
Vanishing Isle Island at the edge of the world where Greek sailors believed they would go when they died. You can see it for a few minutes at sunup and sundown, but it is unreachable. The Vanishing Isle is where most of the dream gods reside.
Ypnsi Sacred sleep that Orasia had once dispensed from the halls of Katoteros. The only antidote comes from the Tree of Life that grows in Apollymi's garden in Kalosis. Also, the only town item that can neutralize Acheron. And for your own sake, forget you know that.
